Background

Program created by legislation passed in 2006

Biomonitoring California was established by California Senate Bill 1379, which was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on September 29, 2006.

In creating this innovative new program, the Legislature laid out key public health goals that biomonitoring data will support:

  • Identify highly exposed communities
  • Explore linkages between chemical exposures and specific health outcomes
  • Inform health responses to unanticipated emergency exposures
  • Assess the effectiveness of current regulations, and set priorities for reform.

Nearly 8000 Californians Biomonitored

To achieve these goals, Biomonitoring California has so far undertaken nearly 30 studies and biomonitored almost 8,000 Californians. Additionally, our laboratories can currently measure over 200 chemicals in biological media, increasing the impact of the Program. Biomonitoring California has continued to build upon outreach and education activities to help promote empowerment and equity throughout California. We have met with over 50 community organizations across the state, developed over 35 chemical fact sheets, and provided updates on Program activities through our website, public meetings, and other published materials.
